Kalamazoo County Says Yes to Long-Awaited Animal Shelter

Years after the idea first came before the Board, Kalamazoo County commissioners have voted to build a $5 million new animal shelter. Supporters of the overhaul, including Kalamazoo County Animal Services and Enforcement Director Steve Lawrence have long criticized the existing building.

Farmers Alley Celebrates 10th Season With Mel Brooks Satire "The Producers"

The disreputable bust-and-boom Broadway adventures of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom in the record-breaking, 12 Tony award-winning musical The Producers are coming to the Farmers Alley Theatre July 20-Aug 5. Stars Stephen Wallem and WMU alum Tony Humrichouser , the real-life couple playing Max and Leo, and director/choreographer Bill Burns join Cara Lieurance to preview the production, which will be the biggest production yet in Farmers Alley Theatre's ten-year history. Wallem and Humrichouser talk about the experience they bring to their roles and praise director/choreographer Bill Burns, who worked directly with the team that launched the original stage adaptation of The Producers, including Mel Brooks, Susan Stroman, and Thomas Meehan.

Several men and one woman gathered in the woodshop at Tillers International farm near Scott’s Michigan to cooper a piggin. Tillers International is a non-profit organization in rural Scotts, Michigan. At their Cook’s Mill Learning Center they teach classes in cheese, soap and broom making, blacksmithing, stone masonry and natural fiber dying among other things.

In Battle Creek’s Leila Arboretum, behind a tall wooden fence, one-acre is devoted exclusively to young children. Katy Avery is the Education Manager at Leila Arboretum Society. The Children’s Garden features many small theme gardens.

Books gone 'meta' and the Chicon 7 Science Fiction Convention

Science Fiction convention Chicon 7, or "Worldcon," will be at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Chicago this weekend. At the convention, hosts will announce the winners of the 2012 Hugo awards. WMUK’s science fiction and fantasy experts John Wenger and Andrea Johnson talked about a few of the nominee’s latest reads as well as a few others.

South Haven Center for the Arts is celebrating Diane Lynn Cheeseman’s art with an exhibit called Water Works. Diane Lynne Cheeseman is a long time resident of South Haven and has lived by at least one of the Great Lakes for almost her entire life. She says she is interested in how the water is ever changing with the daily differences in color and texture on the surface, but also in what goes on down below.

Bell’s Brewery will host the New Issues Annual Poetry Celebration this Sunday. The event will feature local poetry readings, a performance by Whiskey Before Breakfast, and an auction—all part of an effort to keep New Issues Press afloat through the Herbert Scott Legacy Fund. Deborah Gang is one of about ten poets who will read at the celebration. Here’s her poem “Life Before Google”:

This weekend 500 horses and riders will compete in the 11th annual Richland Park Horse Trials. Bob and Kay Willmarth started dreaming about hosting a horse trial more than 20 years ago. After the Willmarth's finished acquiring some 400 acres of farm land in Richland, they worked with a top designer to create their cross country course.

Juan-Carlos Formell On JazzSet

Juan-Carlos Formell participated in a multi-artist showcase at SOB's — home to Brazilian and Latin music in New York — a few years ago. Between a couple of amped-up bands, he took the stage alone (as I recall) and sang in Spanish, accompanying himself on guitar. His voice had urgency to it, and there was an irresistible engine inside that guitar. Ever since, I've wanted to hear and know more.

Michigan Square and Round Dance Clubs

The 50th Michigan Square and Round Dance Convention will be held this weekend at the Kalamazoo Radisson.

On Friday and Saturday, Grand Rapids will host the second annual City Lights Music Festival. The festival will bring in a few electronic dance musicians from across the country and a ton of Grand Rapids talent.
