Fretwork to present Elizabethan age concert

The viol ensemble Fretwork, on a rare tour to the Midwest, is celebrating the music of John Dowland, songwriter, lutenist, and one of the the greatest composers of the Elizabethan age. 

Founding member Richard Boothby tells Cara Lieurance about the composer's personality and his travels and travails across the continent in the 16th century.

Golosa, the Russian folk choir, will perform at sacred music fest

The University of Chicago-based choir Golosa was founded in the 1990s to explore Russian folk repertoire, especially that of the Old Believers, an isolated community who split from the Russian Orthodox church in the 17th century. 

Choir member Anaïs Ahmed tells Cara Lieurance about what drew her into the music. Ms. Ahmed describes the full-voiced sound as a hair-raising sensation. They also discuss learning Russian pronunciation and the poetry of the songs.
