KALAMAZOO, MI -- Isolated geographically from the rest of the city, Kalamazoo's Eastside neighborhood has been economically challenged and in decline for years. The neighborhood, home to about 2,200 residents, sits on a hilltop, bordered by Gull Road and the Kalamazoo River. Its housing stock is older, jobs and businesses have steadily disappeared and blight has taken hold.

Creditors want full appraisal of Detroit Institute of Arts

A group of creditors pushed Tuesday for an independent evaluation of the Detroit Institute of Arts collection. Several creditors asked U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes to order the city to cooperate with an assessment of the DIAs collection. It is the strongest push by creditors, some of whom want art liquidated to satisfy debts and other obligations.

Michigan negotiating with Indian tribes on revenue sharing and off-reservation gambling

LANSING - Millions of dollars in casino revenue sharing and the ability for tribes to open off-reservation casinos could be at play as the state negotiates new compacts with six American Indian tribes. Michigan has agreements with 12 American Indian tribes that operate 22 casinos in the state.

Legislative leaders say they haven't decided on moving abortion insurance proposal

LANSING, MI -- Right to Life of Michigan, which collected more than 315,000 signatures for a citizen-initiated bill to prohibit abortion coverage as a standard feature in insurance policies, expects lawmakers to vote on the proposal and turn it into law by the end of this year.
