Kalamazoo Communities in Schools launches capital campaign

KALAMAZOO, MI -- Communities In Schools of Kalamazoo is launching a campaign to raise at least $4.5 million to help more Kalamazoo students graduate on time. On Wednesday, the nonprofit opened the public phase of its three-year capital campaign. So far, CIS has raised more than $2.1 million toward the total needed to pay for three years of operating expenses.

Kalamazoo County Administrator Peter Battani gets three year contract extension

KALAMAZOO, MI - Kalamazoo County Administrator Peter Battani received a three-year contract extension Tuesday, but not before some county commissioners voiced that they would rather see a two-year deal. Battani's extension was approved by the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners by a vote of 9 to 11, with commissioners Julie Rogers, D-Kalamazoo Township and Phil Stinchcomb, R-Portage, voting against the contract.

Benton Harbor voters reject city income tax

BENTON HARBOR - Benton Harbor voters on Tuesday turned down a city income tax, which supporters had hailed as a solution for various financial woes but which critics had said would discourage businesses from locating in the city. The proposal lost by 124 votes.

PORTAGE, MI -- Two incumbents and a former council member were elected for the next four years to the Portage City Council in Tuesday's city elections. Claudette Reid, the current mayor pro-tem who was seeking her third term, was the top vote getter in the election, tallying 2,531 votes.
