State Rep. Sean McCann explores Senate campaign

KALAMAZOO, MI - State Representative Sean McCann has announced he has formed a committee to gauge interest he would have for a potential run for the state Senate seat in the 20th district. According to documents filed with the state, McCann formed the committee "Sean McCann for State Senate" on July 22, but he says he hasn't made any final decisions about the 2014 election.

Color-coded school ratings paint Michigan yellow

The color code has five colors: green is the best while red is the worst. The majority of schools are falling into yellow which, according to officials at the Michigan Department of Education, means those schools need to be cautious. One of the only schools in Southwest Michigan to receive a ‘green’ was Greenwood Elementary in Kalamazoo.
A new accountability system being launched today for Michigan schools shows many have a long way to go to meet ambitious goals set by the state - with most schools and districts earning a mark that indicates they're in need of improvement. Few schools earned the best rating.

Detroit, Grand Rapids get funds to tear down abandoned buildings

Five Michigan cities in all are going to split $100 million of federal money to get rid of blight.
DETROIT, MI - Detroit will get the lion's share of $100 million in federal funds to remove blight in Michigan cities. Gov. Rick Snyder announced Tuesday morning Detroit will receive $52.3 million in federal money to fight blight. Four other Michigan cities will split $37.4 million to pay for projects to preserve property values and fight crime.

Gov. Snyder to scuba dive Lake Huron shipwreck

LANSING, MI -- Gov. Rick Snyder is jumping in. Snyder, who celebrated his 55th birthday on Monday, is expected to scuba dive a Great Lakes shipwreck Tuesday morning in the Thunder Bay Marine Sanctuary, which is in Lake Huron off the coast of Alpena.

KPL 2014 "Reading Together" picks two books

The Kalamazoo Public Library has picked two books for its "Reading Together" program next year. Both have to do with food and farming.

One is The American Way of Eating: Undercover at Walmart, Appleby's, Farm Fields and the Dinner Table by Tracie McMillan. The other is Novella Carpenter's Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer. Library officials say the books were selected because of a growing demand by people to know more about the food they eat.
