Senator wants to raise speed limits

A Republican state senator from Grand Ledge says posted speed limits in Michigan ought to be higher and based on scientific studies, not political opinions. Sen. Rick Jones, former sheriff of Eaton County, said he wants to eliminate costly speed traps for drivers by adjusting speed limits to reflect actual traffic patterns.

Enbridge dredging permit denied

A decision on a request to use a second site for a dredging "pad" was delayed until August 29th.
COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, MI - Enbridge, Inc. will likely be exploring new options tomorrow for locations to place its dredge pad around Morrow Lake. The Comstock Township Planning Commission voted unanimously late Thursday to deny a special exception use permit for an Enbridge dredge pad located in Comstock Commerce Park.

Minor league baseball returns to Kalamazoo

Minor league baseball is coming back to Kalamazoo. City officials say they've signed an agreement to bring a team from the Northwoods League to the city in 2014.

The league that also includes the Battle Creek Bombers will pay Kalamazoo $35,000 a year to use Homer Stryker Field at Mayors Riverfront Park.

The Northwoods League features college players who want to maintain their skills over the summer.

DNR: No Asian carp DNA in the Kalamazoo River

Officials at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources say tests have not turned up any evidence for the presence of Asian carp in the Kalamazoo River. The invasive species has moved up the Mississippi River to Chicago. Traces of "environmental DNA" from the fish have been found in Lake Michigan beyond an electronic barrier in the Chicago Ship Canal designed to keep them out of the Great Lakes.
