GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Navy Capt. John Meier remembers clearly the words that President Gerald R. Ford spoke in 1976, the year of America's bicentennial. Meier, who was 12 at the time, recalled the patriotic vigor the country's 200th birthday instilled across a nation sore over a turbulent 1960s, the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal that put Ford in office.

KALAMAZOO, MI -- A new city ordinance in Kalamazoo left two people holding firework-related tickets after the smoke settled from the Fourth of July festivities this year. Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety assistant chief, Brian Uridge, said KDPS received approximately 130 firework complaints over the holiday.
