Michigan Hospital trade association analysis supports Medicaid expansion

Medicaid expansion has been proposed by Governor Snyder, many conservative lawmakers remain skeptical.
Even with the underfunding of Medicaid payments surpassing $800 million two years ago, the trade association for Michigan hospitals offers strong support for expanding the federal health program. The annual community benefits report from the Michigan Health & Hospital Association says Medicaid payments to the state's hospitals fell short by $804.2 million in the 2011 fiscal year, a 26.9 percent or $170.8 million increase from FY 2010.

Holland Hospital hopes to add more office space

Holland Hospital later this month will seek approval by the city's planning commission to construct a single-story, 33,000-square-foot office building on the hospital's campus. Hospital spokesman Tim Breed said the facility would be used primarily for physician office space. In the last few years, he said, the hospital has experienced significant growth in the number of physicians on staff.

Portage considering new rules on donation boxes

PORTAGE, MI - Regulations controlling the proliferation of donation boxes in Portage are up for a public hearing at Tuesday's Portage City Council meeting. The donation box ordinance amendment has been discussed since last fall and went through Planning Commission hearings and approval.

Get ready for Comet PANSTARRS

After spending a few months in the skies of Earth's southern hemisphere, the comet will be visible in the northern hemisphere around dusk, low in the western sky, starting tonight through March 13, according to comet experts. Comet-watchers will need clear skies to see the celestial body, experts say.
