Charles River Laboratories to Close Operations in Portage

A global clinical research service company plans to shut down its operations in Southwest Michigan, citing a challenging market and decreased demand for its animal research models. Wilmington, Mass.-based Charles River Laboratories Inc. (NYSE: CRL) will close its plant at 9801 Shaver Road in Portage and lay off all 84 workers, according to a filing the company made with the state.

Vicksburg could use two bond sales to address financial difficulties

VICKSBURG, MI - The village of Vicksburg is hoping that two bond sales will help right its shaky budget and put its finances in order. Faced with $3.6 million in debt, but cleared by the state to deal with its deficit, the village expects to issue two bonds that will help refinance old debts, make need infrastructure improvements and maybe spark some development that in turn would bring in more tax revenue to the village.

Petition Drive for Part Time Legislature Can Proceed

Over 322,000 signatures are required by July 7th to put proposal on the November ballot
The part-time Legislature petition would cut legislative sessions to 60 days a year and cut lawmakers pay in about half to $35,000 a year. It also would require that any amendments and substitutes to proposed bills would have to be published and held for five days before the Legislature could vote on the bills.

LANSING, MI -- The 300,000 to 500,000 Michigan residents eligible to obtain health insurance under the federal expansion of Medicaid may have to wait a little longer to get coverage. Michigan officials are backing off previous indications that Healthy Michigan, the Medicaid expansion plan that is part of the Affordable Care Act, will be in place and providing coverage by April 1.
