Report finds most low-income children in Michigan don't read proficiently

Report found Michigan is one of just six states that did not make progress over the last decade
Lansing Eighty-one percent of Michigans low-income 4th graders and 69 percent of all students are not reading proficiently, according to the Kids Count report issued Tuesday by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Officials with the foundation say proficiency is a key predictor of a students educational and economic success.

Democratic Governor's Association begins running ads for Schauer

LANSING - The Democratic Governors Association began running TV ads Tuesday to boost the candidacy of Mark Schauer, the expected Democratic nominee to challenge Gov. Rick Snyder. Titled "The Difference," the 30-second spot highlights Schauer's background as the son of a nurse and a teacher who worked on early childhood education while with a nonprofit in Battle Creek and "fought for lower interest ratest on student loans" as a congressman.

Portage Schools support putting countywide education millage renewal on May ballot

PORTAGE, MI - You can add Portage to the list of Kalamazoo County school districts supporting the renewal of the countywide enhancement millage in May. Faced with the potential loss of millions if it fails, the Portage Public Schools Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution Monday backing the three-year renewal of the 1.5 mills countywide property tax administered by the Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency.

Snyder raises $5-million for all but announced re-election bid

Lansing Gov. Rick Snyders campaign is reporting it raised more than $5 million in contributions during 2013 and starts the year with $4 million available toward the November election. In a preliminary release of contribution figures Monday, the Rick Snyder for Michigan Campaign said its annual statement will list no personal contributions from Snyder or his wife and no political action committee money, said Snyder political adviser Kyle Robertson.
