Kalamazoo Retirement Task Force Holds First Meeting

A Kalamazoo city task force plans to take on the question of how to handle the city’s unfunded retiree benefits.

The group includes more than a dozen people – retirees and current employees as well as city officials. They held their first meeting at Mount Zion Baptist Church last night, where they agreed on a structure for ten scheduled meetings to come.

Comstock Township Approves Enbridge Dredge Pad Location

Enbridge Energy can go ahead with dredging operations at Morrow Lake this spring.

Last night the Comstock Township Planning Commission granted them a permit to dredge at the Benteler Automotive property between Michigan State Highway Ninety-Six and Interstate 94 near Thirty-Third Street. Enbridge is under order from the Environmental Protection Agency to remove oil that’s settled at the river bottom.

It’s part of the cleanup from the massive Enbridge pipeline spill near Marshall in 2010.

Kalamazoo Public Schools Announces Student TB Case

About 300 students and staff from Kalamazoo Central High School can expect to undergo a skin test for tuberculosis next week. That’s because they might have been exposed to the disease by a student from Central who, Kalamazoo Public Schools confirmed today, has a case of active TB.

KPS learned about the case last Friday from a hospital treating the student, says Kalamazoo County Public Health Department Director  Linda Vail.
