Consumers Energy customers get a rate hike and refunds

Consumers Energy customers will soon see slightly bigger electric bills. The Michigan Public Service Commission has approved an $89 million rate increase, 40 percent less than originally sought by the utility.

The commission says that means a typical residential customer will see an increase of about a $1.67 per month. Consumers Energy had initially asked for a rate increase of $148 million.

Its customers will also get refunds because the utility put a $110 million rate hike into effect on its own in March. The MPSC says Consumers must give back $21 million in over-charges.

Upton: Get PCB's out of Kalamazoo landfill

West Michigan Congressman Fred Upton says PCB contamination does not belong in Kalamazoo’s Allied Paper Landfill. The Saint Joseph Republican and Michigan’s two U.S. senators sent the Environmental Protection Agency a letter last week. It asked the agency to approve “total removal” of contamination at the site on Kalamazoo’s east side.

Allied Paper Landfill cleanup protest planned

Opponents of a proposal to keep toxic PCB contamination in a Kalamazoo landfill plan to hold a protest march next week. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has suggested that the material could be safely contained at the Allied Paper Landfill on Kalamazoo’s east side. But area residents, city officials, and environmental groups say it should be completely removed.
