Western Michigan University hosted the Malaysian Midwest Games over the Memorial Day weekend. The event featured a broad range of Olympic-style athletic competitions for students from Malaysia studying at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

Kalamazoo goes medieval for a week

This week Kalamazoo becomes a virtual time machine as hundreds of scholars arrive for the annual International Congress on Medieval Studies. The 48th gathering at Western Michigan University will include serious academic discussions along with some that are more accessible to the public. The latter category includes sessions on medieval themes in the Harry Potter books and recent movies like The Hobbit.

WMU student media fee a trendsetter?

Western Michigan University may have been ahead of the curve in the way it supports student media. Earlier this month, university trustees approved a five-dollar fee that all students will pay beginning this fall. Students approved the fee in a referendum late last month. It will raise about $150,000 a year to support the Western Herald, WMU's student newspaper, and the student-run radio station WIDR-FM.

Debate over guns on college campuses

As the debate over guns and gun-related violence continues around the country, many university presidents say guns should not be allowed on campus. Western Michigan University and other schools have long had strict rules on weapons that students and others must follow. But some students say the university’s policy conflicts with a state law allowing people with concealed weapon permits to bring their guns to campus.

WMU gets new airline pilots as instructors

A regional airline says it will “loan back” recent Western Michigan University graduates it hires to become flight instructors at the university. Western and American Eagle Airlines announced the deal Friday.

The airline says it will begin working with some students in Western’s College of Aviation when they are sophomores. They’ll become instructors at the school on graduation while being paid by American Eagle. That will give them time to add flight hours needed for an airline pilot’s license.
