Afghanistan en Augusta Guard unit home from Afghanistan <p>A Kalamazoo-area Michigan National Guard unit is returning home after ten months in Afghanistan. More than 90 soldiers in the 1433rd Engineer Company are based in Augusta. They and members of two other units from Iron Mountain and Kingsford were in Afghanistan for what Guard officials call “route clearance missions”.</p><p>One of the unit’s soldiers died and four others were injured when a roadside bomb exploded last August.</p><p>A welcome home ceremony for the Augusta unit will be held Thursday, March 28th, at 4 p.m. in Western Michigan University’s Read Fieldhouse.</p> Wed, 27 Mar 2013 21:57:18 +0000 Andrew Robins 3587 at Augusta Guard unit home from Afghanistan Flags to fly at half-staff for Plainwell soldier <p>Flags will be flown at half-staff Thursday in memory of a southwest Michigan soldier who died after being wounded in Afghanistan. Governor Rick Snyder issued the order Monday for Sergeant Mark Schoonhoven of Plainwell. He died in January at an Army hospital in Texas after his unit was attacked by a bomb in the Afghan capital Kabul in last December. He was part of a transportation company based at Fort Carson, Colorado.
