Rubbermaid jobs heading to Kalamazoo

The company that makes Rubbermaid kitchen utensils and Sharpie marker pens is coming to Kalamazoo. Newell-Rubbermaid says its new design and test center at Western Michigan University’s Business Technology Research Park will employ 100 people.

WMU President John Dunn says he hopes decision on Kellogg Airport will be reconsidered

Western Michigan University President John Dunn says he still hopes federal regulators can be convinced to keep the tower at W.K. Kellogg Airport open. Western’s College of Aviation is located at the airport in Battle Creek. The Federal Aviation Administration announced on Friday that the tower is one being defunded because of automatic federal spending cuts known as “sequestration.”

Comstock Schools add STEM academy

The Comstock Public Schools will have a “STEM” academy this fall. The program approved by school board members Monday night will focus on science, technology, engineering, and math. School officials say employment in those areas is increasing much faster than those in other fields.

The academy will accept elementary students this fall. The district says it will expand into the middle school grades by 2015.

Winter weather means slower growing for Michigan farmers, but it doesn’t stop them from selling their produce at outlets like indoor farmers markets. Winter’s market business doesn’t rival summer’s, but it has been growing in recent years.

Local theatre wants child sexual abuse survivors to tell their stories

Though it’s thought to be one of the most underreported crimes, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control estimate about 1 in 6 boys and 1 in 4 girls will face sexual assault before the age of 18. On Friday night, FIRE Historical and Cultural Arts Collaborative will show a taping of the New York theatre troupe Ping Chong & Company’s production Secret Survivors, where survivors of child sexual abuse use theatre to talk about their experiences.
