Governor Snyder signed legislation this week that transfers responsibility for the state’s Geological Survey to Western Michigan University. Those responsibilities had been handled by the state Department of Environmental Quality. Western Geosciences Professor Alan Kehew will be director of the Geological Survey.
Kehew says geological survey work can be used to find natural resources and for environmental protection. He says such work has a tremendous economic benefit for the cost put into the work. Kehew says people working in construction, development, oil and gas exploration and water protection will find geological survey and mapping useful.
