Artist Alyssa Prince Takes Chalk Art To The Next Level

It's just after Noon on a weekday at Central City Tap House. The lunchtime crowd is eating and drinking, servers are sashaying past chairs, and the speakers are playing rock tunes from the 70's and 80's. No one's really paying attention to the young woman in the center, holding a piece of chalk in one hand, and a copy of the logo for Alaskan Brewing Company in the other hand.

"A lot of people come to the Tap House and a lot of people know the chalkboards, and so when I start drawing them they go 'Oh, it's you that does this! I get in a conversation - usually we'll have a table of six sitting here just chatting with me the whole time," says the woman.

The son of violinist Renata Knific ( professor, Western Michigan University) and bassist Tom Knific (professor, chair of Jazz Studies, Western Michigan University), this eclectic young composer and pianist, with his trio, were invited to perform for the Fontana Summer Festival this weekend.

KIA Gets New Executive Director

The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts will soon have a new executive director. Belinda Ann Tate will take over on September 8th. She replaces former KIA director James Bridenstine, who is retiring after 24 years in the job.

For the last 15 years, Tate has run the Diggs Gallery at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina. She’s credited with enlarging its collection significantly while increasing student involvement in the gallery.
