'Gran Danzon' celebrates flute music of the Americas

Martha Councell-Vargas, an assistant professor of flute at Western Michigan University, recently released a full-length album of new and overlooked flute music by composers of the northern and southern American hemispheres. 

On WMUK's Let's Hear It, Ms. Councell-Vargas speaks with Cara Lieurance about her passion for flute music of the Americas, the stylistic influences she's incorporated into her playing, and the strong friendships that have arisen throughout her musical journey.

KSO Gets New Executive Director

The new executive director of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra arrives May 19th. The symphony announced Tuesday that it's hired Peter Gistelinck for the job after a search that lasted six months. Gistelinck is currently the executive director of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. He replaces former KSO executive director Jennifer Barlament who left last year to become general manager of the Cleveland Orchestra.

'Inside Steinway' Photo Exhibit Lifts The Lid On Piano Production

While next month’s Gilmore International Keyboard Festival is all about celebrating what pianos can do, it's not often that we examine what they are made of. 

The festival has partnered with the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts to present the photography exhibition "Inside Steinway," a series of images of the inside of the storied piano factory, shot by photographer Christopher Payne.
