KCC students, staff to tour European world war battle sites

Most Americans go to Europe to see the sights and have a good time. But a group of students and faculty from Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek will leave on a more serious mission in May. They’ll explore battlefield sites from the two world wars. One of the tour leaders, history instructor Michelle Wright, says that being there provides a “three-dimensional” perspective you can’t get from books and movies.

Winter Weather Advisory

The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for most of Southwest Michigan in effect until 5:00 Monday morning. A wintery mix of frozen precipitation may make driving hazardous overnight.

Gov. Snyder to fill Supreme Court vacancy

Governor Rick Snyder is asking for advice as he fills a vacancy on Michigan’s Supreme Court.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Snyder plans to consult with current justices and his own staff as he looks for someone to replace former justice Diane Hathaway. She retired earlier this month after the state Judicial Tenure Commission announced that it was investigating misconduct charges against her. Last week she faced federal allegations of bank fraud.

Director of State Office of Urban Affairs to speak Monday in Kalamazoo

Harvey Hollins III grew up in Southwest Michigan but has spent the last decade working in Detroit. In 2011, Governor Snyder named Hollins director of the Michigan Office of Urban and Metropolitan Affairs. On Monday, Hollins, a Kalamazoo College graduate, will speak at Stetson Chapel as part of the Martin Luther King Junior Convocation. The event begins at 10:50 Monday morning, and is one of the events planned in Kalamazoo to honor the late civil rights leader

The Kalamazoo band Inflatable Best Friend has just come out with their first album called DMT Bike Ride. Guitarist Tanner Boerman, drummer Ian Howell, and bassist Austin McQuater say the band has come a long way from when they started it in high school.
