In case you think Congressional gridlock is some sort of 21st century invention, director Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln should convince you otherwise. The recent battles over health care and debt ceilings are not all that different than the sort of storms President Abraham Lincoln faced in 1865 when he was trying to drum up support for the 13th amendment to the Constitution, which formally abolished slavery.

Swing State Stories: Final Thoughts

For the two months before last week’s election, Kalamazoo journalist Chris Killian crossed the nation to ask people what they thought about the issues at stake. His Swing State Stories project included a major article for the Christian Science Monitor and reports for WMUK. Now he reflects on a desire that was expressed in town after town along the way for less partisanship and more cooperation.

Combat Veterans Writing Group to read in honor of Veteran's Day
