Alternative Dance Festival Lets Dancers Speak Their Minds

Last week, Michael Miller of Wellspring: Cori Terry & Dancers did a run through of his choreography called “Crackers in Bed.” The dancers posed to recreate familiar Norman Rockwell paintings and then transitioned to the next scene to the tune of a modern DJ.

Miller will premiere the dance at this year’s Midwest Regional Alternative Dance Festival also known as RAD Fest.

The festival will take place Thursday through Saturday at the Wellspring Theatre in Kalamazoo's Epic Center.

Local Writer Challenges Himself With Book Of Sonnets

Kalamazoo native Arnold Johnston is best known as a playwright, but he’s also a musician, a writer, and a poet. He’ll be reading through his new poetry chapbook Sonnets: Signs and Portents Wednesday at Michigan News Agency at 6 p.m. He and his wife Debby will also be reading their play “A Sheltering Tree.”

Kalamazoo Police Chief Describes Department's Work on Racial Bias

The head of Kalamazoo Public Safety says the department is taking multiple steps to address racial bias in its policing. That’s in response to a study from last year, which showed that on average, Kalamazoo police were stopping African-American drivers twice as often as other motorists.

Public Safety Chief Jeff Hadley reported to the city commission last night. He says the department’s efforts include training officers to recognize unconscious prejudices. It’s also led to a department-wide reevaluation of which traffic stops call for a search.

Percussionist Pedrito Martinez Makes His Own Beat To Present Day Success
