Grand Rapids' Tanglefoot Building Is Where Both Flypaper And Artists Stick Around

It's an invention that you never knew you needed - and now that it exists, you can't imagine life without it. Such was the case in the 1880's, when the Tanglefoot Company began manufacturing the product in Grand Rapids. For over 125 years products dedicated to controlling insects have come out of the building, but in the 1980’s building owner Joe Skendzel decided to start renting some of the vacant factory space out.

He had no idea he was creating an artist’s colony.

WMU Wins Big Science Grant

Western Michigan University has won a large grant to help draw more students to science and technology. University officials say the $1.4 million comes from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. They say the five-year project will focus on classes in biology.

LHI Live: Pianist Ahmed Anzaldua and the music of Mompou

Ahmed Anzaldúa recently joined Cara Lieurance at WMUK in the Takeda performance studio to play music of one of his favorite composers: Federico Mompou.

Before becoming a pianist, Mr. Anzaldúa was a trumpet player enrolled in medical school in Mexico. He relates the story of how he began to play piano and eventually became a graduate student at Western Michigan University, where he studies piano with Silvia Roederer and conducting with Kimberly Dunn Adams.
