Japanese bamboo art, a more than 600 year old craft

You might have stopped by the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts this summer and seen the exhibit on contemporary Japanese bamboo art. It’ll be at the KIA until September 15th. One of the artists, Shohaku Yufu, gave a demonstration Wednesday.

One Direction movie tells narrow view of pop band's story

For almost as long as there have been teenagers, there have been teen idols. In the 1940s, you had Frank Sinatra making the bobbysoxers swoon. In the 1950s, it was Elvis and Ricky Nelson and Pat Boone and Fabian. When I was a kid, my classmates were crazy about John Travolta and Shaun Cassidy -- and some of them even believed the hype about the Bay City Rollers being the new Beatles.

Berrien County swine flu case reported

State health officials are reporting a case of "swine flu" in southwest Michigan. The Community health and Agriculture departments say the case involves a child who had pigs on display at the Berrien County Youth Fair earlier this month.  The child was not hospitalized.

Officials say they're trying to reach other exhibitors to find out if they also came down with the H3N2v virus. It causes symptoms like those of the regular seasonal influenza, although some cases can be severe and even fatal. However, experts say this strain of the virus rarely spreads from person-to-person.

Enbridge: $1 billion spent on oil spill cleanup

Enbridge Energy has spent over a billion dollars so far cleaning up the Kalamazoo River oil spill in 2010. That's according to the Gongwer News Service.

WMU a "Best Bang for the Buck" school

Washington Monthly magazine says Western Michigan University is among U-S universities that give students the "Best Bang for the Buck". The magazine put WMU in 46th place this year. The rankings are made based on the monthly's estimate of a school's contribution to the "public good" and the value students get compared to the money they pay.
