Challenges face LGBT elders and youth

Most people face challenges as they reach their retirement years. But those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender face special problems. Two non-profit agencies in Kalamazoo County have developed a new resource guide to help LGBT elders navigate those issues. Kalamazoo Gay Lesbian Resource Center Executive Director Zach Bauer says it created the guide in cooperation with the Area Agency on Aging.

City candidates file for November election

There will be 15 names on the ballot for Kalamazoo City Commission this fall. Tuesday was the deadline for candidates to file papers for the November General Election. The candidates that met that deadline include all but one of the seven members of the current commission. The exception is Vice-Mayor Hannah McKinney who announced earlier that she would not seek another term.

Could you get by on $4 a day?

In 2012, nearly 67,000 people in Kalamazoo County needed “food stamps” to get by. A week-long program called the “SNAP Challenge” is underway to draw public attention to the service known in Michigan as the “Bridge card”.
