Local Fruit Crops Mostly in Good Shape

Southwest Michigan’s fruit season generally gets underway in April. By July most growers have their hands full managing their crops. But in between, many attend weekly meetings held by the MSU Extension.

Their discussions cover every factor that could affect the harvest, from pests to weather. This year the harsh winter took a bite out of several crops, including grapes, peaches and cherries. But much of the news this season is positive.

Battle Creek Police Set 2 Public Input Meetings

The City of Battle Creek has announced two occasions when members of the public can share opinions on who should be the city’s next police chief and other matters of concern.

They include a June 26 meeting where people can meet the city’s three finalists for the position, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Department of Public Works' multipurpose room.

Auto Parts Maker to Bring Jobs to Battle Creek

A company that makes parts for the roofs of cars says it plans to bring jobs and investments to Battle Creek.

WKW Roof Rail Systems LLC is owned by the German company WKW Automotive. It already runs a sales office in the Detroit metro area and a manufacturing plant in Portage. WKW plans to buy the former Toyota Group plant in Battle Creek and use it to produce aluminum roof rails.

The Michigan Female Seminary has been closed for more than a century, but at one time, it was one of the few places to send your daughter to continue her education in the 1800's.
