Michigan ordered to end life sentences for young offenders

A federal judge says Michigan must give a "fair, meaningful and realistic" chance for parole to state prison inmates who were convicted as children.

Judge John Corbett O'Meara gave state officials until the end of the year to make changes in the parole process. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled last year that Michigan's policy of mandatory life sentences for some young offenders was unconstitutional.

New judges in Kalamazoo and Paw Paw

Governor Rick Snyder has announced two judicial appointments for Southwest Michigan.

The governor’s office says he has appointed former Kalamazoo County Assistant Prosecutor Scott Pierangeli to the Kalamazoo County Probate Court. He will replace Donald Halstead who resigned this past summer.

The governor also announced that attorney Jeffrey Dufon of Kalamazoo will serve as a judge on the 36th District Circuit Court in Van Buren County. He replaces Judge Paul Hamre, who retired this summer.
