Hymn composer to lead 'Big Sing,' spiritual retreat

Hear from Reverend John Bell

John Bell is famous as a Scottish composer of modern-day hymns for worship and as a BBC radio commentator. He is also in demand as a leader of spiritual retreats and community music-making. On February 10th at First Presbyterian Church in Kalamazoo, he'll lead a free, public "Big Sing,” co-sponsored by the Michigan Festival of Sacred Music.

Report: WMU faculty union seeks 9-year contract extension

Update January 29th 9:30a.m.  The President of Western Michigan University's Chapter of the American Association of University Professors says there are no current negotiations with the university. Matthew Mingus tells WMUK that the union is considering whether to pursue a nine-year extension for one part of the contract to maintain the current structure for the union. Mingus says there will be a chapter meeting on February 8th for the union to decide what action it wants to take in reaction to Right to Work Legislation.

Kalamazoo Big Brothers Big Sisters chief resigns

The head of Big Brothers Big Sisters in Kalamazoo is stepping down after less than a year on the job. MLive Kalamazoo reports the Deb Buchholtz announced her resignation today, March 22nd. The former chairwoman of the Kalamazoo County Commission joined Big Brothers Big Sisters last July. Bucholtz says she wants to pursue new opportunities that are “closer to my small-business roots”.

State fairground redevelopment plan questioned

Former NBA superstar Magic Johnson and a family friend from Lansing have the only plan being considered by state authorities for the former state fairgrounds in Detroit. They’re confident their plan will help the community. But, as Michigan Now’s Chris McCarus reports, some people in that community disagree. They say close to half of the land would be turned into parking lots. A group called Growtown wants the area used for energy and urban agriculture projects instead.
