Merchants, Kalamazoo's Library Partner for Discounts

The Kalamazoo Public Library is using the month of September to show that having a library card has its privileges.

Its cardholders can get discounts at more than 15 local stores and museums during National Library Card Sign-up Month, according to a news release. Participating businesses include bookstores, coffee shops, restaurants, gift shops and the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts.

Community Health Department Director Resigns

The head of the Michigan Department of Community Health has announced that he’ll resign next month. Director Jim Haveman has led the MDCH since 2012.

According to Governor Rick Snyder’s office, Haveman had planned to stay at his post into next year. But he changed his mind after he recently had a “mild stroke.”

The governor praised Haveman’s leadership as he accepted his resignation. That includes the rollout of the Healthy Michigan plan, which expands the state’s Medicaid program per the Affordable Care Act.

State Horseshoe Championships Come To Kalamazoo

Think of tossing horseshoes and several things probably come to mind, and all of them likely deal with relaxing. Local horseshoeing enthusiasts refer a few of the attributes of this chilled-out pastime as the “Three B’s” – beer, bar-be-cues and backyards. But this Labor Day weekend, a new brand of horseshoeing is coming to town, one that replaces banter over Budweisers with stone-cold concentration.
