WMU moving forward on partnership with Cooley Law School

Western Michigan University is moving closer to an agreement with Thomas M. Cooley Law School. During their regular board meeting on Thursday, trustees authorized Western President John Dunn to move forward to try and reach an agreement for an affiliation plan with the law school. The resolution approved by the board says that Cooley will remain an independent, non-profit school. But will be called the Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School.

Kalamazoo YWCA announces 2013 "Women of Achievement"

Four women will receive “Women of Achievement” awards from the Kalamazoo YWCA next month. The winners announced Thursday include Margaret Merrion,  the dean of Western Michigan University’s College of Fine Arts. The others are Jeanne Baraka-Love, the director of Ujima Enterprises which works with African-American youth in Kalamazoo; Willie Mae Pierson, the first black female real estate agent in Kalamazoo; and veterinarian Heidi Stucki.

The awards will be presented on May 21st. That day, Ronda Stryker will receive the Kalamazoo YWCA’s “Lifetime Woman of Achievement” award.

Popular organ crawl part of Bach Festival Week

  Bach Festival Week begins this Sunday with area churches participating in "The City Sings Bach" during morning services, followed by the "Young Vocalists Concert," an afternoon showcase of top performers in last month's Kalamazoo Bach Festival Young Vocalists Competition.

Fortune, love, springtime: Kimberly Dunn Adams on Carmina Burana

Last September Dr. Kimberly Dunn Adams, director of choral activities at Western Michigan University, began, step by step, to lead a chorus of over 100 singers through the intricacies of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. A mid-20th century classic, it's a setting of of Latin and medieval German poetry on life, fate, food, and love with an unforgettable opening, 'O Fortuna,' adopted by movies and television soundtracks to evoke awe and power.

InsideClimate News wins Pulitzer for story on Kalamazoo River oil spill

An online news organization that covers the environment related issues has won a Pulitzer Prize for its story of oil pipeline safety. Their story included a look at the 2010 oil spill on the Kalamazoo River.
