Bassist Edgar Meyer reflects on groundbreaking career

Bassist Edgar Meyer recently gave a solo concert in Kalamazoo to open the Fontana Chamber Arts season. 

Mr. Meyer and Fontana director David Baldwin sat down with Cara Lieurance before the concert and discussed his career, his approach to bass playing, and his work as a composer. He credits his association with such various artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thile and Joshua Bell to the simple fact that, in his words, "I can write."

A look at WMU's Music, Mind & Medicine conference

A two-day event which brings together professionals in the fields of neuroscience, music therapy, performance, and education, director Ed Roth says the Music, Mind and Medicine conference may result in unexpected synergies and new research that furthers our understanding of how music affects us. 

 Dr. Roth and Cara Lieurance also discuss two public events offered by the conference: a concert by jazz violinist Regina Carter, and a Taiko drumming exhibition.

WMU "State of the University" address

Western Michigan University has accomplished much over the last year. But President John Dunn says it needs to do more in the future. Dunn delivered the "State of the University" address Friday, October 4th, during the university's annual Academic Convocation in the Dalton Center Recital Hall.

Right to Life turns in anti-abortion petitions

A Michigan anti-abortion group says it has turned in more than 315,000 petition signatures. The Gongwer News Service says the initiative my Right to Life is aimed at preventing employers from offering abortion coverage in their health plans. Employees would be forced to by a rider to their policy at extra cost.

Supporters of the measure need 258,088 valid signatures to put the measure before lawmakers.
