Blue Cross Blue Shield Pays State $100 Million

Blue Cross Blue Shield has made its first payment to a state fund for health programs. Gongwer News Service reports the amount is $100 million.

The company has to pay because its legal status changed under the Affordable Care Act. Previously it was called an insurer of last resort. But the health care law makes it unnecessary for states to carry those.

The state now considers Blue Cross a nonprofit mutual.

Berrien, Barry Counties Receive Funds for Habitats

Aquatic wildlife projects in Barry and Berrien Counties are getting a boost from the state Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR has awarded $200,000 to the City of Niles to remove a dam at Pucker Street on the Dowagiac River. It will also give just under $100,000 to the Barry Conservation District for creek habitat restoration.

The DNR says it received 58 applications for a total of a million dollars for aquatic habitat projects; it’s ended up splitting the money between eight of them.

Future of Detroit Art Collection Still in Question

Bondholders and other Detroit city creditors could still press for a sale of the Detroit Institute of Arts' works.
Experts said that even in the wake of tentative agreements between the city and Detroit retirees and pensioners, the bondholders and others pushing hard for a sale of art still have viable legal arguments. It's therefore too early to predict whether or not Detroit's emergency manager might still be pressured into putting DIA art back on the table, they said.
