Painted Chair Affair brings out the artist in crafters

Friday night about a hundred chairs will fill the Battle Creek Country Club. But not just any chairs; each one is a unique piece of art. Every year artists and first-timers alike paint old chairs and enter them in the Painted Chair Affair, where they’ll be auctioned off to benefit the Woman’s Co-op. The auction starts at 6 p.m. on Friday.

Conductor Andrew Koehler calls Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Orchestra Competition winner Cullen O'Neil an "amazingly gifted" cellist. 

He discusses the work she'll be performing with the orchestra this Sunday in Chenery Auditorium. He also describes the special qualities of Dvorak's Symphony No. 8, putting it in context between the writing of the seventh and ninth symphonies.

Michigan's air quality gets better, and worse

The quality of the air in southwest Michigan took a hit last year. But a new report by the American Lung Association suggests that, in general, Michigan’s air is getting better.

The State of the Air 2013 report gives Allegan County an “F” and Kalamazoo County a “C” for ozone levels. But both got much better marks for soot and other particulates. No data was collected in Calhoun, Van Buren, and Saint Joseph counties.
