Today about 24 percent of Michigan’s kids are impoverished compared to 19 percent in 2008. The Detroit Free Press says that comes as a surprise to some who believe the U.S. is pulling out of its economic recession.

A new fungus in Michigan is threatening the state’s only venomous snake. The Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake lives primarily in the lower third of Michigan in swamps and marshes.

"KALAMAZOO, MI – Members of Kalamazoo's budget revenue panel learned Monday that a city income tax would largely fill the city's looming budget holes, but whether or not the tax would be among the panel's preferred revenue-generating options remains to be seen." (Kalamazoo Gazette)
