Rick Chambers has boldly gone on to new frontiers. A communications professional, journalist and novelist in Kalamazoo, he happily adds "Trekkie" to his list of achievements. Memories of watching Star Trek as a four-year-old are still vivid in his mind, drawn to the cast of characters in the show even as he shivered in delicious fear at their grand adventures and a parade of alien creatures.

July 24th marks the 100th anniversary of a huge, yet largely forgotten event in Great Lakes history: the wreck of the SS Eastland. Its story is tragic. June 24, 1915. Thousands board the Eastland from Chicago, including hundreds of Western Electric workers. And then, while still docked, the Eastland tips over, with passengers still on board. People rush to help, but more than 800 die.

In March, five Western Michigan University students won a $15,000 Wege Prize—a national sustainability award—for their aquaponics system. Aquaponics is a circular system of growing food where wastewater from farmed fish fertilizes plants; the plants then take that water and purify it for the fish to use again.
