Making sustainability a habit

A Western Michigan University graduate student is working on a project she hopes will dramatize the costs of not saving energy. The project was one focus of National Campus Sustainability Day events at Western on Wednesday (Oct. 23).

Western Michigan University officials say it has been working on ways to cut energy use for nearly two decades even has the number of buildings on campus grew. And Western President John Dunn says those efforts have paid off:

Teaching tolerance using racist memorabilia

The nation’s long struggle with racial discrimination has left some litter behind: objects some now call “contemptible collectibles”. Some of these are on display inside the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia at Ferris State University in Big Rapids. Its founder and curator is David Pilgrim, the university’s vice-president for diversity and inclusion. He speaks Thursday, October 16th, at 5:30 p.m. at Western Michigan University in the Richmond Center for Visual Arts, Room 2008.

WMU "State of the University" address

Western Michigan University has accomplished much over the last year. But President John Dunn says it needs to do more in the future. Dunn delivered the "State of the University" address Friday, October 4th, during the university's annual Academic Convocation in the Dalton Center Recital Hall.

Right to Life turns in anti-abortion petitions

A Michigan anti-abortion group says it has turned in more than 315,000 petition signatures. The Gongwer News Service says the initiative my Right to Life is aimed at preventing employers from offering abortion coverage in their health plans. Employees would be forced to by a rider to their policy at extra cost.

Supporters of the measure need 258,088 valid signatures to put the measure before lawmakers.

ISAAC "Issues Convocation" stays the course

The Kalamazoo community organizing group ISAAC will hold one of its regular issues convocations Tuesday, October 3rd. But this time there’s a twist: the Interfaith Strategy for Advocacy and Action in the Community usually asks the community for input on the issues it should address. But this time the group says it doesn’t plan any changes in the agenda set at the last meeting in early 2012.
