KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Red hot UIC (7-2) rattled off its seventh win in a row, defeating Western Michigan, 71-61, Wednesday at University Arena. It was the Broncos' first game after a two-week break and sophomore Miracle Woods returned to the floor after missing the last five games with injury.

Western Michigan University men's basketball coach Steve Hawkins said Wednesday night he wished the Broncos had a game to play Thursday. WMU dropped its third consecutive game with a 71-68 loss at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday and Hawkins sounded less than pleased during his postgame radio interview.

ALMENA TOWNSHIP, MI - Doug Stiles, longtime supervisor of Almena Township, has resigned from his position, citing a lack of board support. "I don't really know what happened other than the fact that several people can't talk to you unless you have an audience," Stiles, 70, said Wednesday.

Michigan unemployment rate drops slightly in November

LANSING - Michigan's jobless rate inched down to 8.8 percent in November, after remaining at 9 percent since August. It's the first monthly drop in the state unemployment rate since April, according to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget. But total employment actually fell by 7,000 over the month while the number of unemployed dropped by 10,000.

Interim CEO of Battle Creek Community Action to keep job

Michelle Williamson, interim CEO of Community Action since this summer's controversial ouster of Nancy Macfarlane, was on Monday named the permanent head of the Battle Creek nonprofit agency. The agency announced her appointment in a news release Tuesday, saying its board of directors voted unanimously to move her into the permanent post.
