LANSING - A new state Senate committee formed this week will look at how teacher unions are complying with Michigan's controversial right-to-work law. Sen. Arlan Meekhof, R-West Olive, was one of the sponsors of the law and is distressed that some teachers have had a hard time quitting their unions.

"That's pretty much the case for Kalamazoo and West Michigan as well," said Brian Long, who is director of Supply Chain Management Research at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids but is based in Kalamazoo.

Ali Russo said it wasn't until her teammates starting running towards her and the crowd starting cheering that she knew what happened. Russo, a Kalamazoo Central High School graduate, scored Western Michigan University's winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Ball State in the women's soccer Mid-American Conference Tournament championship game Sunday at Eastern Michigan's Scicluna Field in Ypsilanti.
