MEAP Test Results Show Reading and Math Scores Up in Kalamazoo Area Districts

KALAMAZOO, MI -- Considering the Michigan Educational Assessment Program exams administered in October involved testing in seven grades and five subjects, it's hard to make sweeping conclusions about the results released Friday morning. Students in grades 3-8 were tested in math and reading, plus writing in grades 4 and 7, science in grades 5 and 8, and social studies in grades 6 and 9.

Gull Lake to Put School Millage Request Back on Ballot in May

RICHLAND, MI - A Gull Lake Community Schools' millage proposal that was rejected by a slim margin Tuesday will appear again on the May 6 ballot. The 0.65-mill tax increase was defeated Tuesday with total votes of 1,029 against and 1,024 in favor with just more than 50 percent of votes cast.

Computer Error Leads to False School Closing Message in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - A technical error triggered the false closing message on the Grand Rapids schools' website Friday, Feb. 28, not a hacker, according to John Helmholdt, district communications director. The erroneous message was discovered between 6 and 6:15 a.m. Friday morning, after being up possibly as long as 30 minutes.

City of Kalamazoo Looks to Purchase Bronson Park from County

KALAMAZOO, MI - After leasing Bronson Park from Kalamazoo County through different agreements since 1855, the city of Kalamazoo is now hoping to purchase the land outright. In a letter to Kalamazoo County Corporate Counsel Thom Canny, Kalamazoo City attorney Clyde Robinson states that in light of the two parties' 50-year lease recently expiring, the city wishes to acquire Bronson Park as opposed to entering another leasing agreement.
