The Western Michigan men's basketball team defeated a surging Northern Illinois team on Sunday, 74-71, in DeKalb, Ill. The Broncos (14-8, 7-3 Mid-American Conference) turned a four-point halftime lead into a 16-point advantage during the second half, but the Huskies came roaring back.

Judge Says Lawsuit Challenging Michigan's Emergency Manager Law Can Move Forward

Detroit A federal judge has reopened a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Michigans emergency manager law, an attorney for plaintiffs in the case said Friday. John Philo, legal director for the Sugar Law Center, said U.S. District Court Judge George Caram Steeh ruled on Thursday that the suit may proceed.

The Michigan Attorney Generals Office will conduct an investigation into how a man imprisoned for multiple murders was able to escape from the Ionia County Correctional Facility on Sunday and remain on the loose for nearly a full day. Michael David Elliot, 40, walked past a string of security cameras and guards to open a prison fence with his bare hands.

New City Manager Named for Benton Harbor

BENTON HARBOR - Darwin Watson was named Benton Harbor's city manager Thursday by Emergency Manager Tony Saunders II. Saunders further named Marja Winters, a Detroit native, as assistant city manager/community and economic development director. She will take the place of Nicole Rodden-Bowen, who took a job in Philadelphia.
