State fees go up for birth, death, marriage records and copies

The standard fee to search for a record would increase by $8. Copies would rise from $29 to $42.
LANSING, MI -- Searching birth, death, marriage or divorce records and requesting copies is about to get more expensive in Michigan. The state Senate on Tuesday narrowly approved a bill expected to help the Department of Community Health generate $1.5 million a year in new revenue through increased vital records fees.

Bills seek to prevent scrap metal theft

The legislation would not allow recycling companies to pay people cash for commonly stolen items like copper wire, air conditioners, and catalytic converters. Recycling companies can also choose to hold off on cash payments for three days.

Bike signals might change in Michigan

Lead in text: 
To signal a right turn on a bicycle, you’re supposed to use an upturned left arm. But many cyclists just put their right arm straight out. A bill that’s circulating in the state House would allow both.
LANSING - On a day when the federal government shutdown and the Affordable Care Act went into effect, even the most mundane business was happening in the state Capitol. The House Transportation and Infrastructure committee unanimously passed a bill that would allow bicyclists to use an additional method to signal a right hand turn.

Schedules altered during Amtrak high-speed rail construction

Lead in text: 
Some passengers might have to take buses to different rail lines.
LANSING - Amtrak is temporarily changing schedules and service on its passenger route between Pontiac and Battle Creek while crews prepare the track to handle high-speed trains. Starting Monday, two trains on the Wolverine line will terminate and originate in Battle Creek instead of Pontiac, so passengers will instead take chartered buses.
