Animal abuser registry too expensive for the state

Now legislators want to provide Michigan’s online background check system, I-CHAT, to animal shelters for free to offset costs of doing background checks on potential animal adopters.
Animal shelters would be required to do criminal background checks on people wishing to adopt animals to ensure they haven't been convicted of animal abuse charges under a package of bills under consideration in the state Senate this week.

State delays sale of wolf hunting licenses

Minnesota saw a huge drop in its wolf population after its first wolf hunt last year. Though a Minnesota DNR spokesman said that could be because the deer population also dropped. Opponents of the wolf hunt worry about what the hunt could do to the wolf population in Michigan.
The announcement comes as wildlife managers in Minnesota, which had its first wolf hunt last year, are cutting their wolf quota nearly in half for this fall's hunt there, after surveys showed a big drop in the wolf population.

Charter schools grow in Michigan

Experts say while some Charters have surpassed public schools in reading and math scores, not all Charter schools are created equal.
Sara McClendon wasn't satisfied with her daughter's public school, and she never expected to enroll her at a charter school. But when Kylie McClendon enters third grade in September, she'll be starting classes at Success Mile Charter Academy, a new school that's opening at a former Target store in Warren.
