KALAMAZOO, MI -- Richard Perry, former superintendent of Portage Public Schools, has filed a lawsuit to overturn an arbitrator's ruling that the Portage school board was justified in forcing him out. The suit was filed July 9 in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court, 20 days after the arbitrator's decision was released.

Dangerous waves, currents on Lake Michigan

Police in South Haven rescued six swimmers off of the city’s South Beach on Friday.
SOUTH HAVEN, MI -- The North and South Beach in South Haven have been closed to water activities due to reported 6- to 8-foot waves on Lake Michigan. The South Haven Police Department and South Haven Area Emergency Services are asking beach goers to stay out of the water until the waves calm down and the beach "water closed" warning flags are removed.

Bill would make teacher evaluations optional

The U.S. House of Representatives passed that bill Friday, just as Michigan legislators are considering another bill to make student performance the main factor in determining a teacher’s salary.
LANSING -- With state-level workgroup recommendations expected next week on guidelines to evaluate Michigan's teachers, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill Friday that would make teacher evaluations optional rather than mandatory. The Michigan Council for Educator Effectiveness is expected to release its recommendations on a system to assess teacher performance based on student achievement next week.

Layoffs to come at Palisades Nuclear Power Plant
