Historical marker stolen from WMU's East Hall

The marker was snatched sometime between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning.
KALAMAZOO, MI -- Sometime between the afternoon of June 26 and the morning of Thursday, June 27, someone pried the 42-inch-by-54-inch metal historic marker at East Hall away from its wooden posts, and made off with it. "We discovered it the morning of June 27, " said Western Michigan University Deputy Chief of Public Safety Blaine Kalafut.

Domestic partner benefits ban blocked by judge

The American Civil Liberties Union challenged a law denying benefits for domestic partners on behalf of five same-sex couples who were in danger of losing their health insurance.
A federal judge has blocked Michigan's ban on domestic partner benefits for employees who work in school districts and local governments. Judge David Lawson in Detroit says the plaintiffs so far have made a "plausible claim" that the law violates the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

Farmers may need permits for wetland use

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency wants more restrictions on how wetland use is regulated.
Michigan may lose its Department of Environmental Quality-run wetlands permitting program despite legislation awaiting the signature of Gov. Rick Snyder that is designed to stave off a federal takeover. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for several years has identified problems with the state's enforcement of the Clean Water Act - the only state other than New Jersey that is allowed this power.

Unemployment rises with summer job hunt

The joblessness rate in May went up by as much as 0.9 percent in Kalamazoo and Hillsdale counties to only 0.2 percent in Allegan.
KALAMAZOO, MI - More people looking for work during the summer was more than the area job market - which grew -- could handle. That pushed the unemployment rate for the Kalamazoo-Portage area to 7.4 percent in May. "A significant number of individuals entered the job market seeking summer employment in May," wrote Leonidas Murembya in his latest analysis of Southwest Michigan.

That is remarkable since we rank 33 out of 50 states for the number of lightning strikes. Florida has the most lightning, and the most lightning related injuries and deaths.
