80th District Representative Mary Whiteford Says She's Worked To Be "Adult In The Room"

State Representative Mary Whiteford has been representing most of Allegan County since she won a special election in March. The Republican, now faces a challenge in next week’s primary for the 80th state House District.

Whiteford was elected after Cindy Gamrat was expelled from the state House following a sex and cover up scandal. Whiteford’s background is as a pediatric nurse. Her family also owns a tax and financial business.

Whiteford says she has worked hard to provide constituent service since she took office because “there was none before that.” Whiteford says she is conservative, but can also work with other lawmakers.

The other Republican in the race, Abbie Nobel is critical of Whiteford for her vote for Detroit Schools’ financial rescue. Whiteford says it would have cost the state more to allow Michigan’s school district to go through bankruptcy. She says it also includes conservative reforms, and limits liability for the rest of the state.

Whiteford was an alternate delegate for John Kasich to the Republican Convention. Asked about Donald Trump, Whiteford says she’s a Republican who will vote for her party, and Trump for President in November. Whiteford says she’s praying that Trump will put solid professionals and conservatives in the key roles of the government.
