Akropolis Reed Quintet brings award-winning sound to Saugatuck

Lauren Landry

The Akropolis Reed Quintet, winners of the gold medal at the 2014 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, will appear at the Chamber Music Festival of Saugatuck this week.

Comprised of oboe, bassoon, clarinet, bass clarinet and saxophone, the Akropolis Quintet has recorded two albums of newly-composed works for this combination of instruments, which is gaining popularity as a standard ensemble. Cara Lieurance talks to saxophonist Matt Landry about the quintet's mission to build new repertoire, about the intricacies of creating a good ensemble sound, and about performing for audiences of all ages, especially the young.

Cara Lieurance is the local host of NPR's All Things Considered on 1021 WMUK and covers local arts & culture on Let's Hear It on 89.9 Classical WMUK weekday mornings at 10 - 11 am.
