Kalamazoo Public School officials say parents should throw away some weekend food backpacks handed out on Thursday, March 12. They were distributed to about 600 kids at 12 of the district's elementary schools.

The Food Bank of South Central Michigan in Battle Creek says that some boxes of shredded wheat breakfast cereal contained insect larvae. The affected boxes have the lot number KBB 0211 on the top left corner.

The Food Bank says it has disposed of the cereal boxes that were still on its shelves. It says parents should discard any that went home with children. School officials say they have not received any complaints about the food. They say the problem affected only a small amount of food the district received from the Food Bank.

KPS officials say backpacks were given to students at Arcadia Elementary; King-Westwood Elementary; Lincoln International Studies School; Milwood Elementary; Northeastern Elementary; Northglade Montessori Magnet School; Parkwood-Upjohn Elementary; Prairie Ridge Elementary; the Spring Valley Center for Exploration; Woods Lake Elementary; and the Woodward School for Technology and Research.
