Caladh Nua's Derek Morrissey Talks Tradition, Innovation In Irish Music

caladhnua.com

The five-member Irish traditional group Caladh Nua recently visited Kalamazoo, performing for school children, college students, and a community audience at Western Michigan University during their visit. It was the culmination of a month-long tour of the United States, which took the band to Florida, New Mexico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and other states.

Derek Morrissey, who plays Irish button accordion with Caladh Nua, spoke with Cara Lieurance about growing up in the tradition, and how the globalization of Irish music has allowed musicians to perform in different ways. They also discuss how Caladh Nua comes up with the original tune sets and arrangements that set them apart from other groups.
