The city of Kalamazoo says a community survey shows broad support for its proposed “Foundation for Excellence.”

The city announced in July that it would pursue a plan to secure 70-million dollars from private donors to shore up city finances. City officials say that would allow for a property tax cut, and could also lead to a permanent endowment to support the city budget.

A news release from the city says 78% of people surveyed in August said they support the concept. Some city commissioners have questioned whether the private funds would buy influence from city leaders.

In a statement, Kalamazoo City Manager Jim Ritsema says he understands those concerns. Ritsema says the city is consulting with experts to ensure that best practices are incorporated in the proposal.
