Concealed Pistol Bills Pass State Senate

Bills to overhaul Michigan’s process of issuing concealed pistol licenses have cleared the state Senate. The legislation no longer contains controversial language that led Governor Rick Snyder to veto a similar bill last month.

Republican state Senator Mike Green is the bill’s sponsor. He says he’s happy it was the first bill the Senate passed in the new legislative session.

“I’ve had discussions with our leader and he felt it was important, as I did. And I convinced him that, let’s get it moving, get it out of here, and get it done – as long as everybody’s comfortable with it," Green says.

All but one Democrat voted against the legislation. Critics say it threatens local control over approving concealed pistol licenses. State Senator Steve Bieda was one of eight Democrats who voted against the bill.

“I do think our locals are in a much better position to determine these type of decisions. I also saw it as a solution looking for a problem.”
