County Commends Shooting Survivor's Courage

A woman who helped protect a group of kids from a gunman during a mass shooting in Kalamazoo has been recognized by Kalamazoo County. Tiana Carruthers was in Richland Township February 20 when a stranger approached her. When she saw he had a gun, Carruthers told the children who were with her to flee. The man shot her several times, causing serious injury. The kids were unhurt. On Wednesday, county commissioners said Carruthers had carried out, in the words of the resolution, “an uncommon act of heroism.”

Six people died in the shooting and one person besides Carruthers was badly hurt. Lawyers for suspect Jason Dalton plan to argue their client was insane during the shootings.

Sehvilla Mann joined WMUK’s news team in 2014 as a reporter on the local government and education beats. She covered those topics and more in eight years of reporting for the Station, before becoming news director in 2022.
